Layout
the layout is very neat which means it is very easy for the reader to understand. This means that the reader can quickly see what is in the magazine and therefore can get to the page that they want to get to. it is in an L shape which is a basic layout but is the main layout for Q magazine. It is very easy to navigate.

Image
The Courteeners are the main focus and are the largest image on there which shows this. There are also smaller images to show what else is in the magazine that isn't the main focus.

colour scheme
The standard colour of q magazine are used. Red, White and Black which makes the text stand out from everything else.

Main Image: The main image is very big showing Rey's dominance and importance. They have used a close up of her. This makes her more recognisable and to sell her image to the target audience.
The uses of colours in the main image have many connotations. The Red implies love and passion however there is a very small amount of it and therefore suggests she hasn't had much luck with love and that it has slipped away from her.

The low lighting in the image creates a very dark tone which suggests a lot of mystery that surrounds Rey. The image itself suggest that Lana herself has been hurt or she is scarred too a certain degree by a past event. This image i feel is very cold. The article may spend some time on this and what happened in her past. Her eyes are closed which shows she may spend a lot of time thinking about it and it has a bad effect on her.  this would make a reader curious and therefore would want them to read on.

The font appears to be be very neutral which shows that Lana is an artist that appears to both Genders.

The font begins big and then becomes smaller. The large paragraphs may sum up what the article is about and then the smaller ones go into further detail on what was said in the larger paragraph.

This double page spread gives a lot of information about drake and his journey to becoming a global superstar. we know this because of all the text that is involved in this double page spread in comparison with the pieces of imagery we receive. The timeline along the bottom also shows Drakes progressive rise to fame.

The image on the left hand side of the spread is the largest image. This image shows Drake now and him performing with rapper 'Lil Wayne' who also signed him up. This shows how Drake has started to become very successful in the music industry.

The image on the right hand side is of when Drake was on the TV show 'Degrassi'. This image is smaller which shows hat this was in Drake's past. He is also shot with the other actors from the other show. they put this in here to show Drake's transition from an actor to an artist

"I'm young. I'm 23. I know i have a lot of growing up to do" is in green which shows a very positive vibe from Drake. It shows he is a mature and light. This helps highlight his personality further and how he is quite different to other rappers.

underneath the contents title there are other artists who are featured in this issue of billboard. you are told the page number they are on and given a photo of them. to me i feel this would help Drake because if they readers like people like Lady Gaga, who is featured in this issue of billboard, then it would mean that there is a greater likelihood that someone would pick up the magazine and would come across Drake's article about him.

on the right hand side of the contents page we have the 'Billboard' No1 charts. this would help the reader find out more easily who is at the top of the charts without them having to look through the entire chart list.

Main Image: This image is a close up of Drake as he is the "new face" of hip hop. At this time, 2010, Drake had a surge of popularity. The image is very dark which creates a mysterious tone and mystery around Drake as he is a new figure in the music industry.

Masthead: The masthead clearly stands out here as it uses vibrant colours compared to the black and white image of Drake. Drake is a new artist and therefore is behind the masthead. This is because not many people will know Drake and having him behind the masthead shows that he isn't entirely the main focus of the cover and so readers can identify the magazine brand. The bright colours would draw a reader to the masthead so they know what magazine it is before seeing the cover star.

colour scheme; The colour scheme uses dark colours such as black. At the moment nobody really knows who drake is and therefore the uses of these dark colours emphasises his mysterious and laid back style. the cover also shows this because the layout is also very basic

Colour Scheme; The colour scheme stills uses red white and black which is the normal colours for Q magazine. these colours as usual work well together and make each individual are of the contents stand out.

imagery: Once again there is an image of Rey with a bloody head which is a direct link to the cover. The image of Rey is larger then the other images which shows she is the main focus of the Magazine. The image has been zoomed in on which adds an element of mystery to the Contents page and draws the reader to find out more about Rey.

Layout: The layout is in an 'L' shape. This is to show what other parts of the magazine are available this week. However the layout shows how important Lana is in this magazine. her image is bigger then the others. This emphasises how iconic she is as a pop star.

dience.
Colour scheme: There are basic colours on the magazine front cover (red white and black) however colours such as pink and yellow are used which appeal to a female audience
Main image: The main image is of Lana Del Rey. Here she is pictured as a queen or princess, which once again appeals to a female audience however there is blood running down the side of her face. The sub-line relates to this, 'So what's so bloody good'

Masthead: The mast head once again stands out but also relates to the blood running down Rey's face. people's eyes would be drawn to the masthead almost immediately as it is so vibrantly different.

The Cover Line; the cover line looks like it has been hand written. it looks like Rey's signature. because it is written in pink and in an informal way some would say that Rey is a little bit of a rebellious artist. It is also effective because it is informal which is surprising for a front cover.

Puffs: their is a puff in the top right hand corner of the cover. We know it is a puff because it is 'Exclusive'. It is a added component to draw the reader in.

In the top right hand corner Lady Gaga is written as 'lady GAGA' to catch the readers attention. Some people would just automatically know her as 'GAGA' because it is such a iconic name. The lower case use fore 'lady' suggests however she is very sophisticated and lady like.

Main image: The main image on the left hand side of double page spread is effective as it is what the reader would see first. It is a very large image which emphasise how big of a star she is. It is edited and given a black and white filter which makes her also look very sophisticated and implies she is serious about her music. The image also would gain male attention, as it is seductive, and may make the reader more likely to view the article.

The article itself also draws the readers attention. The big red 'L' goes with Q magazine's colour scheme and logo. the size of the 'L' catches the reader's eye and may also hint how big Lady Gaga is as a star.

Layout; The layout is very basic but effective. The big red letter brings attention to the article.

Skyline: The skyline across the top of the magazine help to emphasise that 'Q' magazine is the best music magazine. the use of white and blacks makes it stand out and the use of capital letters suggests that they really want the reader to notice the skyline.

Masthead: The masthead's colour scheme i feel works really well with the rest of the magazine cover. This is because it stands out with the black border and grey background which means someone would see the logo almost immediately and know what music magazine it is as it is eye catching. furthermore the colours of the masthead relate to other areas of the cover such as the '100 most shocking moments in music as they share the same shade of red.'

The Cover Line: The cover line is the big writing that says ' Lady Gaga'. This immediately tells the reader what the main focus is going to be in the magazine in this case it is 'Lady Gaga'. It is also clear that the cover line relates to the cover image which is Lady Gaga.

Puff/Pugs: There is a puff on this cover which is just under the masthead. In this Magazine it says "World Exclusive" which shows it is a Puff. This would gain the reader's attention and make them more likely to buy it.

Cover image: Cover image is in the centre of the cover to show who is the main focus of the magazine

Features: The features of this magazine are more likely to make an individual buy the magazine because it shows a wide range of a few music genres and shows that it isn't just lady gaga that is only touched upon in the magazine even though she is the main focus.

Screamer: at the bottom of the page i feel that the part about the 'Gorillaz'  is a screamer as it is demanding attention.

Colour scheme: i feel the colour works very well as very dark colour and a red have been used which I feel makes the magazine stand out more.

Drafting & Planning: investigating typography

The task that we did was to look at six identical magazines covers that has had the typography changed. Our task was to see what magazine cover was more effective, with the different font, and how they followed the mechanical theme better than others. We had to order the magazine cover from the ones that were the most appropriate to those that really didn't fit the magazine theme.
Here's what I think:

Order of suitability (most to least)

B - (1) I felt that the font i used for B was suitable for this magazine cover. It clearly follows the theme and gives a mechanical feel, it very clear and it stands out. I think that making the beginning of each letter bold makes the magazine and the font stand out more.

E - (2) The font style on this also follows the theme of  robots and mechanics. the font seems to be able transition into the front cover nicely and fits well and doesn't look out of place. however i feel that the font is too bold for this cover and some people may have trouble reading it.

A - (3) I find that this font doesn't fit the theme of the magazine and is too subtle and looks formal. It sets a serious tone which to a certain degree relates to the cover because it is a very serious cover image.

F - (4) This font doesn't suit the cover magazine. it is too weak and not that effective.

C - (5) To casual, looks comical almost and breaks the impression made on the reader by the serious photograph. the font is a little childish.

D - (6) This font, in my opinion is too sophisticated for this magazine. It doesn't follow the same font style as the masthead. the cover star is made to look serious not sophisticated. this type of  font is out of place and doesn't follow the main themes.

The headline of this double page spread is trying to emphasise that Nicki minaj is a Goddess. 'The gospel according to Nicki Minaj'. The colour is very vibrant and uses colours that are primarily associated with females. this could be used to show Minaj's girlish or youthful side. the colours are kept to minimum of three. the main image is also very vibrant. The main colours that can be seen here is mainly black and white which may show the high level of professionalism in Minaj's music. the Black and White hand jewellery she is wearing may be trying to show how much of an icon she is. The layout and Colour scheme is very basic. there is a use of anchorage text which is highlighted in a pink/purple colour. the same colour as Minaj's lipstick which may show that she said it. the main image is making I contact which may pressure the readers.

This example of a double page spread uses 'anchorage text' to draw the reader in and to show David Bowie's return to music. it also helps to show how much he loved music. The image of Bowie is on the left hand side which a reader would look at before viewing the article. the colour scheme is very simple yet effective. The colours of Black and White are the only colours present and therefore show a high level of professionalism in Bowie's music and that he is very serious about it. The dark colours may also be a nod to Bowie's genre of music which is Rock 'n' Roll. Bowie is also making eye contact in the main image. this is a modern newspaper article but the image of Bowie was taken years before this article was written. this image shows Bowie in his prime and therefore may be trying to emphasise that he is still able to make music like he was able to all those years ago. i also feel that the layout is very organised which may be a reflection on Bowie's organisation and the Newspapers. overall i feel this double page spread would really gain a readers eye as David Bowie is such a music icon and how there is a lack of colour which gives the reader a sense of the old days when Bowie was in his prime.
